Sinatra's A Jolly Christmas is a
wonderful combination of both secular & religious classics, which
demonstrates why Sinatra deserved the adoration he
received.
Cynthia Basinet's For You-With Love EP contains only
one Holiday song, but that's enough to warrant her being listed
here. Her voice is a jazzy masterpiece, and her rendition of "Santa
Baby" is simply the best ever. No doubt, Old Saint Nick would give
her whatever her heart desired. (That is, as long as Mrs. Claus
didn't find out!)
Amy Grant's Home For Christmas
is worth it's price for the beautiful "Mary's Song (Breath of
Heaven)". A very underrated singer - Ms. Grant's presentation
on this effort is flawless.
Jackie Gleason's Merry Christmas
is an instrumental masterpiece. Also of note is the fact that Mr.
Gleason selected some very obscure Christmas tunes to do. Oh, how
sweet Christmas is!
The Vince Guaraldi
Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas is an understated,
instrumental work of wonder. Besides the terrific original pieces,
Mr. Guaraldi put is own unique touch on Yuletide classics, such as his
rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy", which is a gift.
Vanessa Williams's Star Bright
is a remarkable offering from a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice to
match. She ranges from playful to jazzy to serene, and hits the mark
on all counts.
The Carpenters' Christmas Collection
is a complete collection of their Holiday work. An angelic voice
singing Christmas songs. Just Heavenly!!!
Leon Redbone's Christmas Island
proves that Christmas can be REALLY cool. If you're looking
for something a bit different, this is the ticket
daddy-o!
Luther Vandross's This Is
Christmas recording again proves that Luther has one of the most
beautiful and soulful voices ever to grace our ears. It's is just
the thing to put a little jingle in your step.
Dean Martin's Making Spirits Bright
is an absolute gold mine. It is a compilation of selected songs
from his Winter Romance album and his Dean Martin Christmas
Album, with the later not available on disc. Mr. Martin's voice
is a perfect match for the Holidays and his rendition of Silent Night is
one of the most beautiful ones ever recorded.
Harry Connick, Jr.'s When My Heart Finds
Christmas displays a level of craftsmanship astonishing for
someone so young. Most of the material on this recording is original
and it is great - from the beautiful title ballad to the swingin' "It Must
Have Been Ole' Santa Claus".
Mel Torme's Christmas Songs was
(unbelievably) his first and only Christmas album. The late, great
Velvet Fog, who co-authored the Christmas Song, puts forth a simply
perfect effort that covers both standards and the seldom recorded.
His reworking of Glow Worm is a jazzy feast, and his version of
Christmastime Is Here is magic. (By the way, he is aided on
this outing by Keith Lockhart - now of Boston Pops
fame).
Kenny G's Miracles - The Holiday
Album is as gentle and
pretty as snow falling on Christmas Eve. While some jazz "purist"
(a.k.a., less-successful artist) sometimes critize his work, this album
is simply terrific. Turn down the lights and enjoy!
A Very Special Christmas lives
up to its title. The first (and best by far) of the the series, it
contains some terrific & unique remakes of Holiday standards (and
not-so-standards). Artist on this offering read like a who's
who of music: Sting, Madonna, Springsteen, and the Pretenders, just to
name a few. On top of that, profits go to the Special Olympics, so
you can't go wrong with this one!!!.
December by George Winston is
proof that miracles do happen. A truly beautiful effort for a beautiful
time of year.
Girls just want to have...a great Christmas Album! Ms.
Lauper's Merry Christmas...Have A Nice Life! album was the
suprise gift of 1998. A truly inspirational work filled with mostly
original material, ranging from the funk to pop, with a couple of
beautiful ballads to boot!
